Q: Where are Malibu VBC Sand Practices?
A: All beach practices are at Zuma, 30000 PCH, Malibu, CA 90265
Free street parking is almost always available.
Courts are adjacent to the pay lot entrance and restrooms.
Q: I’ve never played beach volleyball before, how do tryouts work?
A: There are no tryouts. If you want to play beach volleyball, there is a place for you at Malibu VBC Sand.
Just sign-up, and you will be placed in a group at your level.
Q: I’ve been playing beach volleyball, but my friend who’s never played wants to tryout?
A: There are no tryouts; your friend can join with no problem, and eventually, your friend will catch up, and you can play tournaments together.
Q: Is volleyball mainly a girls’ sport?
A: More girls than boys play volleyball in the United States, but no gender owns the sport. Globally, volleyball is much more evenly popular, and as the head coach for Brazil said, “Soccer is a religion, and volleyball is the #1 sport!”
Many great athletes in the US either played volleyball growing up, focused on another sport, and have since returned to volleyball or discovered the sport a bit later.
…and many more
Q: I want to play in my first tournament. What should I do?
A: Check out our tournaments page for all the tournaments offered, select a few coming up that you would like to play in, find a partner, give them the tournament options you’ve selected, and then sign up online.
Q: How do I sign up for tournaments?
A: Go to our tournaments page, select the tournament you’d like to enter, and then follow the prompts to register. If it’s your first one of the season, you will have to renew your CBVA, AAU…ect memberships before registering. If not, have your and your partner’s membership numbers ready for registration.
Q: When is the next tournament?
A: There is one every weekend from March through September, depending on how far you want to travel. Anywhere from Santa Barbara down to San Diego, something is happening.
Q: Should I book private lessons?
A: Like academics, many people make it through college without getting a tutor or private lessons. However, like academic tutoring, private lessons can greatly build confidence, gain new skills, and refine established techniques. Whatever the reason, it is up to you.
Q: How can I book private lessons?
A: Contact the coach of your choice directly to make arrangements. Prices range from $65/hour to $105/hour, and small group rates offer lower per-hour pricing.
Q: What are the age groups for tournaments?
A: AAU Beach Volleyball Age Divisions (Boys & Girls)
How do I find a partner for tournaments?
A: Network! One of the most essential life skills you’ll learn in volleyball.
Talk and get to know everyone. Talk to your teammates in Malibu Sand training, opponents at tournaments, and even your athletic friends who don’t play volleyball yet.
You can always invite them to practice (it’s easy; the first one is FREE) and then figure out which tournaments fit both of your schedules.
Q: Do I need to commit to all practices and tournaments?
A: No, beach volleyball is entirely on your schedule. You can pay as you go and schedule as you want.
We offer practice packages that you can purchase when you cannot attend consistently, and we offer all-access monthly passes when you’ll be around and want to devote a lot of time to training. Tournaments are the same.
Other than registering early enough to secure a spot, there is no requirement to play any number of tournaments.
Q: How can I get Malibu VBC Sand team gear?
A: Malibu Sand orders practice shirts and other team gear twice a year, so be sure to get your order in when the time comes.
Q: What should I wear to practice?
A: We ask that you wear a Malibu Sand T-shirt. During colder months, you should bring sweatpants, a hoodie, and sand socks. During hotter months, wear a T-shirt, shorts, and sand socks.
Q: What if I need to drink water or use the bathroom during practice?
A: Water breaks will be provided, and you should bring plenty of water to make it through a practice. Bathroom visits should be done during water breaks, but always inform coaches before leaving for the bathroom and go to the restroom accompanied by a teammate.
Q: How do I get my tournament medal result posted on the Malibu VBC website?
A: First of all, congrats on your tournament finish! Please forward us pictures and information about the tournament (location, age group, partner name), and we will post it to the home page.
